Chelsea have completed the club record £60m signing of striker Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid on a five-year deal.
Despite being strongly rumoured to be linking up with former manager Jose Mourinho at Manchester United, the 24-year-old changed his mind at the last minute, delighting Blues boss Antonio Conte in the process.
“We have added a fantastic striker, even at a young age he has won a lot already and we are looking forward to welcoming him to the squad,” he said.
“For sure this transfer market is a crazy market, but it is not only for this season but for the future seasons.
“It is very important the choice. Morata for sure is our first choice. He is a good player, the right prospect for Chelsea and hopes to show his value with us.
“I think for sure this is a good signing for us. He is a young player, but has a lot of experience, he went to Juventus and Real Madrid. He has a lot of experience and I think this is a good sign for us.”
However, the Chelsea boss refused to be drawn on whether his new signing was better than Romelu Lukaku who Chelsea failed to lure back to Stamford Bridge and eventually lost out to Manchester United.
“For me, Lukaku and Morata are at the same level, first choice for a great club like Chelsea and United,” he added, very diplomatically.
Morata will need time to adapt to the faster pace of the Premier League, but is sure to prove his worth in the season ahead.
