Liverpool appeal Mané ban

Liverpool will appeal against Sadio Mane’s three-match ban for his red card against Man City on Saturday.

The Senegalese winger was issued a straight red after his high-footed challenge on Ederson, but the Reds are hoping to get the suspension reduced by one or maybe even two games as there was clearly no malice in the incident.

The referee’s decision to send the player off, when Liverpool were one goal down but still having their share of possession, was instrumental in the eventual 5-0 defeat.

If the appeal is unsuccessful, in addition to next weekend’s game against Burnley, Mané will miss both the League Cup clash and Premier League game with Leicester City.

Mané has been key to Jurgen Klopp’s side’s attacking play this season and any suspension is likely to disrupt the good start the Reds have had to the current campaign. However, it does leave the manager with the option to recall Philippe Coutinho back into the first team after his Barcelona transfer request fiasco.
